The Bar S Ranch spans some 8,000 hectares of rolling terrain, nestled in the Porcupine Hills near Nanton, Alta.

Long before Alberta became a province, ranchers raised cattle here, branding their animals with a distinctive mark.

"The Bar S brand has been in use here in Southern Alberta since 1886," says Clay Chattaway.

"And by our family since 1919."

Photographer Leah Hennel visited the Chattaways in the spring as they gathered with friends and neighbours to brand this year's calves, carrying on a century of family tradition.
