Cabinet watch

The CBC News Decision Desk projects an overall winner when we’ve seen enough counted results to make a call. This could be early in the night, before all results have come in. For instance, if only 30,000 votes have been counted, but they are well distributed among a province’s regions, this could be enough to make a projection when it comes to who will win the election. While it may be a small percentage of the electorate, this number is still much larger than an opinion poll. Trends like vote share, seat change, what’s happening in key, vote-rich regions, vote efficiency, who is winning toss-up races, who has incumbents yet to see results from their ridings, and how many of the races are close and could flip also inform our election projections.

How we make our calls

Close races

The first column lists ridings alphabetically. The second column shows which party is in the lead and by how many votes. It also shows how many percentage points the leading party is ahead by. When a winner is declared, this column updates to say which party won and by how much.
